Let’s not waste our wonderful world

Today’s a *really* big day because Saasha my co-founder and I are taking the plunge and launching our first proper TV advert for OLIO. It will be airing on Sky, Channel 4 & ITV over the next 3 months.

The concept is breathtakingly simple. We’ve filmed a group of young children — including our own — singing a reimagined version of Louis Armstrong’s “Wonderful World”, on a scene of utter climate devastation — one of the UK’s largest landfill sites.

We want to tell the TRUTH about the *staggering* amount of waste that’s generated by us in our homes — 2 billion tonnes globally, and over 1 tonne per household per year here in the UK.

One tiny, tiny part of the landfill where we filmed in Swansea, Wales

In doing so, we hope to inspire absolutely everybody to make a difference by sharing more & wasting less. Because when you throw something away, you’re not only generating waste — you’re also wasting ALL the resources that went into producing it in the first place.

When it comes to the climate crisis it’s easy to think that what we do doesn’t count. But that really couldn’t be further from the truth. With over 60% of greenhouse gas emissions generated as a direct result of household consumption, it’s more important than ever that we embrace our agency and recognise the power of what we do in our homes. After all, there’s no such thing as “away” when it comes to waste, and we’re rapidly smothering the planet in it.

With the consumption-induced mania of Black Friday and Christmas just around the corner, we’d love for as many people as possible to see our message, so if you could take a moment to share the video on social media we’d *really* appreciate it🙏🙏🙏

PPS Massive thanks to Sky’s Footprint Fund which instigated the creation of the campaign, and has awarded us £250,000 of free airtime; to our creative agency Hell Yeah! for producing such hauntingly beautiful work; to Squadron Venture Media for showcasing it across TV, London buses & the tube; and to Transatlantic for helping spread the word via influencers & the media.
